VPN- Limitation, DNS, WebRTC, IPv6 leakage

VPN- What are the limitations in VPN?

VPN is the best choice for online privacy. It will encrypt your connection, your data and hide you in internet. But there are some limitation while using VPN.

Limitation/ disadvantage of VPN

  • You will get slow internet experience. Some VPN provide much more slower connection.
  • The connection get break in certain time interval that make tedious for using it.
  • For paid VPN, its cost is high.
  • VPN provider may sell your browsing data to third parties source. Mostly free VPN use this type of trick to make money.
  • In most country, VPN is illegal to use.
  • Some websites can block you like netflix .
  • Mostly VPN server provider can't make good encryption for stealing you data, tracking.
  • And DNS leakage is one limitation with most of all VPN.

Some terms in VPN limitation

Many people are unknown about the VPN doesn't provide 100% anonymity. There are many factor that doesn't make a user 100% anonymity. These are:-

  •  DNS leakage

DNS or domain name system is the phone book of internet. While visiting a website, DNS translator translate the website link/domain name into IP address i.e alphabet into numerical value. A man is not necessary to remember this code.  It is changed by DNS server. While we search a domain name(website link) , DNS server returns a IP address of it and it will be searched in internet. You will get result according to the IP address. Most of internet service provider make feature to their costumer to access internet through a DNS server from which they can control and also use for recording costumers internet activity and logging.

When a costumer connect a VPN/private network for security, Operating system should be connected to the DNS server of the VPN. But its operating system will continuously use the default DNS server which is provided by internet provider. This is called DNS lekage. Even a costumer use VPN but their internet activities are recorded by DNS server. So you won't be 100% anonymous. So we should prevent this to protect yourself or for anonymity. There are few way to prevent DNS leakage. They are change the DNS server of your router or device(mobile, pc etc)(Change your DNS server to local IP or local DNS server i.e 0.0.0.0 .) , use openVpn, and use ExpressVPN.

  • WebRTC Leak

Web Real Time Communication(WebRTC) is used to connect devices(web browser and mobile application) in peer. Actually, it is used to send and receive generic data, video and voice in peers to help developer to make powerful voice and video communication. This is open source project by google but it is also supported by apple, Microsoft, Mozilla etc. It allows the developer to create a high quality communication through audio, video. Such as google, microsoft, facebook etc use this service to make good quality secure connection.
To communicate between web browser and mobile application, need to know IP address of each other. I already told that it is used by many website including google, facebook etc. So while using VPN, your real IP will be known by webRTC to some sites which use webRTC. That is you are visible and your real IP is know. This is called webRTC leakage. To prevent this, you can use ExpressVPN , use extension for webRTC, also you can disable it through the config setting of the browser.

  • IPv6 leak

IPv6 is a recent version of IP address that is 128 bits address system. So it will provide higher number of IP address that mean it can be used for high amount devices with unique IP address. Most of our mobile, pc, TV support IPv6 but not all devices. That's why there is limitation in IP address.

Most of VPN provider are fails to tunnel the IPv6 . That's mean your IP address is not totally anonymous i.e visible. In details, if your device and a website support IPv6, your device will connect to IPS through IPv6 but not through VPN. There is a leakage of your IP which is called IPv6 leak. To prevent this, you can disable IPv6 in your browser from the setting of the browser while you are using VPN or also you can use AstrillVPN.
